Traditionally, the humble compass has been, and still is, one of the
most basic requirements for all outdoor enthusiasts. Whether for
orienteering work or for getting oneself out of trouble when the
weather worsens or the paths just disappear! And the good thing is that it needs no batteries!

However, small, light hand-held GPS units by Garmin or Magellan
working from the 24 military satellites in geo-stationary earth orbit,
are small and reliable enough to have become standard equipment.

Accuracy down to a few metres (if you stand still long enough!)
can be obtained, and other useful features, such as the ability to
enter way points along your course to remind you when to change
direction, your bearing, and telling you how much further until you
can take your boots off mean the GPS has become as vital a piece
of equipment as the map, compass and tin opener!
